What Is a Crypto Address and How to Use It Safely

A crypto address is a string of letters and numbers that shows where coins can be sent on a blockchain. It works like an account number: you can share it freely, and anyone can send funds to it.

Address, public key and private key

A wallet generates a private key, derives a public key from it and then turns the public key into an address. The address is safe to publish. The private key and the seed phrase that restores it must stay secret: whoever holds them can spend the funds.

Why addresses look different

• Bitcoin: addresses start with 1, 3 or bc1.
• Ethereum and other EVM networks: 0x followed by 40 hexadecimal characters.
• Tron: 34 characters starting with T.
• XRP, Stellar and some other networks: a transfer to an exchange may also require a memo or a destination tag.

How to avoid mistakes

1. Always copy and paste the address instead of typing it by hand.
2. After pasting, compare the first and last four to six characters: clipboard malware can replace the address.
3. Scan the QR code when you pay from a phone.
4. Make sure the address belongs to the network you are sending on.

Can you reuse an address?

Most wallets let you receive funds to the same address many times. Bitcoin wallets often generate a new address for each payment to improve privacy, but the old addresses keep working.
