Dollar-cost averaging (DCA) means buying a fixed amount of an asset at regular intervals, regardless of its price. Instead of trying to guess the best moment, you spread your purchases over weeks or months.

How DCA works: an example

Suppose you invest $100 in a coin every month for four months:

MonthPriceCoins bought
1$502.00
2$402.50
3$254.00
4$502.00

You spent $400 and received 10.5 coins, so the average cost is about $38.10 per coin, which is lower than the average price of $41.25. A fixed sum buys more coins when the price is low, so with DCA the average cost per coin never exceeds the average price.

Advantages of DCA

  • You do not need to time the market.
  • Sharp price moves put less emotional pressure on your decisions.
  • The strategy is easy to follow on a fixed schedule.

Limitations of DCA

  • In a steadily rising market, buying the whole amount at the start would have brought more coins.
  • Each purchase may carry a fee, so very small and frequent buys can become expensive.
  • DCA does not protect you from a long-term decline of the asset itself.
